No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its role in national projects. They were built at an rapid pace, beating forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
