Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
