European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The official stated the action was “another example” of tying government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city prior to the new year, alongside an ongoing border security initiative.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, following concluding a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.
